On Saturday, 6/26/21 at approximately 9:40 pm Salinas Police responded to the 1500 block of Tuscany Way on a report of a victim of a shooting. On arrival they located an adult male 23 years of age suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital however he died as a result of his injuries. The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time.

On 5/31/2021 at 10:13 pm, officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation with several gun shots detected in the 900 block of Del Monte Avenue. As officers arrived on scene, two gunshot victims arrived at a local hospital. One male juvenile (17) suffered a gunshot wound to his torso, while a second male juvenile (16) suffered gunshot wounds to his upper torso and extremities. The injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

Homicide Investigation

On 5/26/21 at 9:42 am Salinas Police Officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of N. Main St. on a report of a victim of a shooting. On arrival they discovered the male victim (54) inside the apartment deceased. Salinas Police Detectives responded to the scene and as the investigation developed the suspect was identified as Giovanni Jimenez (22). At approximately 12:30 pm on 5/26/21 Jimenez was located in Salinas and taken into custody without incident. He was later lodged at the Monterey County Jail charged with the homicide.

Decoy Shoulder Tap Operation

Agents from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) and Salinas Police Department conducted a program called a Decoy Shoulder Tap Operation which targets adults who purchase alcohol for people under 21 years of age. Under the program, a minor (Explorers) under the direct supervision of a peace officer will stand outside a liquor or convenience store and ask patrons to buy them alcohol. The minor indicates in some way he or she is underage and cannot purchase the alcohol.

This year’s Click it or Ticket campaign is from May 24-June 6. During this time, the Salinas Police Department will actively look for drivers and passengers who are not wearing a seat belt. This includes drivers who do not secure children in child safety seats.

The 2020/2021 Monterey County Civil Grand Jury just released its findings after investigating police reform at the Salinas Police Department. The report- Salinas Police Department, from Traditional Policing to Community Policing- delineates findings on the Salinas PD Collaborative Reform Initiative. The Salinas Police Department has worked diligently to address the 110 recommendations.

Search Warrants

On 04/27/21, Salinas PD officers were dispatched to a strong armed robbery that occurred at the Northridge Mall. Officers contacted the victim who had been assaulted and robbed by four unknown males. The Violence Suppression Task Force took over the investigation and was able to identify the four males as active Norteno gang members from Salinas, Ca. Search warrants were authored for four locations in Acosta Plaza and arrest warrants were obtained for Bertin Medrano (27 yrs old) and three other juveniles, all who participated in the assault and robbery.

UPDATE: On 04/13/2021, we were notified by the Monterey Coroner’s Office that the 17 year-old male victim that had been shot in this incident and hospitalized since that date had succumbed to his injuries. The victim has been identified as Adam Diaz Gallegos a resident of Salinas. As a result,one of suspect’s (Manuel Michael Sanchez) charges has now been upgraded from attempted murder to murder.

Attempted Homicide Investigation Arrest

On 4/7/21 at approximately 10:15 pm Salinas Police Officers responded to the area of Industrial Place and Sanborn Place on reports of a shooting that had just occurred. On arrival they located two male victims suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim, whose identity was initially not known was suffering from a single gunshot and was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. This victim who has now been identified is a 17 year old male, and he remains in critical condition. The second victim, an adult male 22 years of age was suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital in stable condition and was treated and released.
