On Friday, 8/13/21 at approximately 8:25 pm Salinas Police Officers responded to a report of a victim of a shooting in the 1900 block of Harvard Ct. On arrival they located an adult male victim 36 years of age suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers attempted life saving measures and began CPR however the victim succumbed to his injuries. An adult male wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt was seen running from the area immediately after the shots were fired.

District Attorney Releases Facts Concerning Officer Involved Shooting on July 16, 2021

Salinas, California- Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni today announced
pertinent facts concerning the individual shot by police during an officer involved shooting (OIS),
which occurred on Friday, July 16, 2021, at approximately 8:37 p.m., on Smith Street in Salinas.
The individual, later identified as 19-year-old Gerardo Martinez, died shortly thereafter. Salinas
Police Officer Mario Reyes discharged the fatal round.

On 7/19/2021, officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the 500 block of Fremont St at approximately 4:33 AM. Officers found a 25-year-old male victim who had been shot. Officers and paramedics attempted life saving measures but were unsuccessful. The victim was pronounced deceased. Detectives are on scene conducting the investigation, no further information is available at this time.

On 5/31/2021 at 10:13 pm, officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation with several gun shots detected in the 900 block of Del Monte Avenue. As officers arrived on scene, two gunshot victims arrived at a local hospital. One male juvenile (17) suffered a gunshot wound to his torso, while a second male juvenile (16) suffered gunshot wounds to his upper torso and extremities. The injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

On 5/26/21 at 9:42 am Salinas Police Officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of N. Main St. on a report of a victim of a shooting. On arrival they discovered the male victim (54) inside the apartment deceased. Salinas Police Detectives responded to the scene and as the investigation developed the suspect was identified as Giovanni Jimenez (22). At approximately 12:30 pm on 5/26/21 Jimenez was located in Salinas and taken into custody without incident. He was later lodged at the Monterey County Jail charged with the homicide.

Decoy Shoulder Tap Operation

Agents from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) and Salinas Police Department conducted a program called a Decoy Shoulder Tap Operation which targets adults who purchase alcohol for people under 21 years of age. Under the program, a minor (Explorers) under the direct supervision of a peace officer will stand outside a liquor or convenience store and ask patrons to buy them alcohol. The minor indicates in some way he or she is underage and cannot purchase the alcohol.
